Sophomores: Is Early SAT/ACT Testing Worth Considering?

For most students, SAT/ACT testing begins in junior year. But for some sophomores, an early test in May or June can make sense.

Students who may be good candidates for early testing often have a few things in common:

  • Advanced math progression (currently in Pre-Calculus or beyond)

  • Strong PSAT performance (around 1400+ on the sophomore PSAT)

  • Anticipation of a very busy junior year with AP classes, activities, or athletics

Taking an early test isn’t about “testing early and often.” It’s about testing when the timing is right. An early attempt can provide a useful baseline, reduce pressure later, and help students plan their testing strategy more thoughtfully.

One helpful first step is SAT vs. ACT comparison testing, which provides a clearer baseline and helps determine which test may suit a student better.

For many families, the question isn’t whether to test early—but whether it’s the right time for their student.
